Hot weather is here. Markets, gardens, watering holes, etc. are all in full swing. Summer is official and we are heading towards the festivities of the Fourth of July!
I will be posting on five of the closest and best events that our local area has to offer in a countdown to the day!
Surprisingly few of the local municipalities offer day of fun and even fewer tackle the fireworks display but the ones that do are renowned.
Chapel Hill Fourth Of July Celebration * July 4th* 7 – 9 PM
Southern Community Park, 1000 Sumac Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514
Touted as one of the best town July Fourth Celebrations, this event provides live music, balloon animals, midway games, eating contents, fireworks and more. The Town of Chapel Hill is starting a new 4th of July tradition for 2019. They’re moving the celebration and fireworks from UNC’s Kenan Memorial Stadium, where it has been for several years, to Southern Village and Southern Community Park. Apparently, several factors went into the location change with the most important being the inability to protect the stadiums new synthetic grass athletic field.
This year’s celebration at Southern Community Park’s sports fields will be open starting at 7:00 pm for those who simply want to bring a blanket or chair and relax with family and friends in the park before the show.
For those who are looking to feed the family and catch some live entertainment before the fireworks begin, then the Southern Village Green is the place to be. From 6:00 – 9:00 pm, Food and drink will be available as well as live music from Idlewild South, a kid zone full of activities and a UNC Athletics Zone.
The fireworks are expected to begin around 9:15 pm and this year’s show will be visible from the park, the Village Green, and many other locations around town.

Besides Southern Community Park and Southern Village, the following locations will offer views of the fireworks. In order from best to worst:
- Carrboro High School
- Merritt’s Pasture
- UNC Memorial Hospital
- Greenbridge
