It is not too late to get your tickets for this fabulous local event. Farm to Fork brings together the local farmers and local chefs/restaurants in celebration of local-ness. Our farmers and our entrepreneurs need your support and in return will supply you with delicious, fresh cuisine. You can see what farms and chefs are participating here.
The first event this year is the picnic on June 2nd. For your $100 (per adult, $50 for youth ages 13-20 (no alcohol), and free for children ages 12 and under) of monetary support you will receive your fill of delectable treats including local brews. Dozens of our area’s best chefs, farmers, artisan producers and beverage providers will create a array of delectable dishes highlighting the bounty of the season. The Picnic also features fun activities for children, live music, and surprises for the whole family!
If you can’t make the picnic, mark your caledesr for September 5thfor the second installment. Dr. Monica M. White, an Assistant Professor of Environmental Justice at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is the President of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network will be presenting her research on communities of color and grassroots organizations that are engaged in the development of sustainable, community food systems as a strategy to respond to issues of hunger and food inaccessibility. She is the author of Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement.
After Dr. White’s lecture patrons will enjoy a delicious meal prepared Billy Cotter of Dashi and Toast, Roberto Copa Matos of Copa, Thomas Card of Counting House, all in Durham; Brendan Cox of Oakleaf in Carrboro; Andrea Reusing and Miguel A. Torres of Lantern in Chapel Hill; and Angelina Koulizakis-Battiste and Sarah Sligh of Angelina’s Kitchen in Pittsboro. The evening will also feature libations from Fullsteam Brewery and The Haw River Wine Man, and live music by the John Brown Jazz Trio. All this for $45 a person.
All proceeds support beginning farmer programs at The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). CEFS was established in 1994 and is a partnership of North Carolina State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. CEFS’ mission is to develop and promote just and equitable food and farming systems that conserve natural resources, strengthen communities, improve health outcomes, and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond.Your dollars go towards the beginning farmers programs such as farming apprenticeships programs aimed at getting more your people interested in and prepared for farm careers. More than ever, we need an strong, independent, local and resilient agricultural community to provide nutrition and jobs.
