Chatham County summers are no joke. Once the humidity settles in and the temperature climbs past 90, locals start thinking about water. Fortunately, the county has options, from a big reservoir with sandy beaches to a pool with a slide to a river you can paddle at your own pace. Here is where to find relief when the heat sets in.
Hit the Beach at Jordan Lake
Jordan Lake is the obvious starting point. The 14,000-acre reservoir is the most visited site in the North Carolina state parks system, and it draws people all summer for good reason. The Ebenezer Church access area has a swim beach, picnic shelters, and hiking trails. Parker’s Creek Beach is another good option for families looking for a slightly quieter scene with picnic tables nearby. Both beaches are part of Jordan Lake State Recreation Area and are monitored for water quality through the summer season. Entrance fees apply per vehicle on weekends in spring and fall and daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so plan accordingly.
Paddles Swim and Pickleball in MOSAIC
If you want a pool rather than a lake, Paddles is worth knowing about. Paddles is a private swim and pickleball club located in Pittsboro, inside Chatham Park. It has a six-lane competition-style pool with a slide, a kiddie pool, eight pickleball courts, and a concession stand. The club is open to both Chatham Park residents and non-residents, so you do not have to live in the development to join. It sits on Vine Parkway in the MOSAIC district, which puts it close to dining and retail if you want to make a full afternoon of it. Memberships are available, making it a good fit for anyone planning to spend a significant amount of time in the water this season.
Get on the Haw River
For something more active, the Haw River is a short drive from Pittsboro. Haw River Canoe and Kayak operates out of Bynum and offers guided trips, equipment rentals, and lessons across three- to eleven-mile segments of the river. Options include kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboard yoga, at skill levels ranging from beginner to experienced. The three-mile Bynum Upriver Paddle is one of the easier routes and works well for families with kids. Getting out on the water in the morning before the day fully heats up is a smart move in July and August.
Plan Ahead and Go Often
Chatham County does not have a beach in the traditional sense, but it does have enough water-based options to get through the summer without suffering through it. Whether you prefer a sandy shore, a lap pool, or a river current, something within a few miles of Pittsboro will do the job. Check conditions and hours before you go, since access points and membership availability can change by season.
