Take a Hike in Chatham County

There’s nothing quite like the great outdoors. Heading outside can relieve stress, get the blood flowing, and provide excellent opportunities to move our bodies. There are no shortage of great trails around Chatham County. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just want a pretty place to stretch your legs, keep these trails in mind:

Jordan Lake Track Trail

Jordan Lake State Forest

This easy two-mile hike near Pittsboro takes about 40 minutes from start to finish. The trail is popular for birding, fishing, and camping. Solitude isn’t hard to find here, despite the area’s popularity. Bask in the fresh air and get the heart pumping with a quick jaunt through the forest. Wear waterproof shoes, though, as some parts of the trail can be a bit muddy.

Vista Point Red Trail

Jordan Lake State Forest

If you’ve conquered the previous hike and want to upgrade to something a bit more challenging, hit the Vista Point Red Trail. At 2.5 miles, the hike is typically completed in under an hour. It features some of the most stunning vistas around, and is dog-friendly – so long as they are leashed. Most of the trail is underneath the canopy, making it the ideal walk for sunny days.

Roland E. Horne Trail

Pittsboro

This short, family-friendly hike is ideal for all ages. At just one mile in length, it takes just 20 minutes to complete. It circles the campus of Central Carolina Community College. While not quite as scenic as the Jordan Lake spots mentioned above, the Roland E. Horne trail is a bastion of trees, birds, and fresh air right within city limits. Take the kids and let them run out their energy – parents can linger behind and enjoy the peace!

MOSAIC Walking Trail

Pittsboro

Want to combine shopping, dining, and a walk through nature? MOSAIC at Chatham Park offers something for the whole family. Take a quick stroll through the Central Green, where you can size up the various boutiques and eateries before deciding where to go next. Or enjoy the longer one mile walking and biking trail that encircles the entire district. If you’re not big into nature, this trail offers convenience and a place to get some steps in!
