If you haven’t been to Saxapahaw you are missing out! Once a booming mill town, the small hamlet of Saxapahaw, named so in relation to the former Sissapahaw tribe that settled the area, fell onto hard times until a few remaining community members rallied together to revitalize a whole town. And they succeeded. It is not unusual to find young and old from near and far making the trip out to the little town on the river for food, music, shopping and special events.
Located just over the Chatham County line in Alamance County, Saxapahaw is just a short drive down Highway 87 from Pittsboro and Chapel Ridge.
This town of only 2,000 is packed with life. The town centers around the old mill which has been transformed into upscale condo’s and an full scale event center and business complex. The main feature being the Haw River Ballroom- where you can rent an amazing space for weddings and events or enjoy an impressive line-up of musicians who are happy to step off the beaten path. The two-story venue features multiple bars and during the daytime work hours you can drop in to grab a cup of coffee (or a beer) at Cup 22 Coffee house or you head down to the ground floor to Haw River Ales for a local brew.
If food is your goal, Saxapahaw is home to the only five-star gas station around. The General Store may look like a gussied-up gas station but inside you will find local produce, local meat, other locally made products and a great beer selection. But what draws the crowds is the local sourced, made to order food that is seriously delicious. A full menu of gourmet delight drawing from southern comfort with a seasonal twist. If you are feeling a sit-down kind of situation you can head up to The Eddy where you are able to enjoy the same high quality, seasonal fare with a more upscale approach.
Local businesses dot the complex as well including a bookstore, a butcher shop, a salon and more. Saxapahaw is also home to a summer farmers/artist market with live music (Saturdays in Sax) and is the headquarters for Paperhand Puppets. If nothing else draws you, the picturesque setting on the river provides an natural escape- you can rent kayaks and canoes or simply enjoy a river walk or rock jumping in the Haw River.
